Maxon Cinebench 10 x64

Website: Cinebench

Maxon Cinebench is based on Maxon's popular animation software, Cinema 4D, which is used extensively by studios and production houses worldwide for 3D content creation. We've used the built-in CPU benchmark, which uses a 3D scene file to render a photo-realistic image of a concept bike. The scene makes use of various CPU-intensive features such as reflection, ambient occlusion, area lights and procedural shaders.

Overclocked the Core i7 920 and Q6600 with DDR2 and DDR3 (to a lesser extent in platform value) win the day here, the former by another large margin. All the Core i7's make for great value in this multi-threaded test - making the most use of all their resources to be more efficient.

The AMD's are lower than the Core i7's, but also great value still - even more so than the overclocked E8400 because it simply lacks cores to compete. Generally the non-overclocked Core 2 quads also do provide a positive value for the most part, but the increase in CPU cost compared to AMD's quad prices means that the extra performance is not quite as good at offsetting this, so the relative percentage gain is lower.

When we talk about single thread performance, clearly the E8400 overclocked to 4GHz has the advantage since it's just a $163 CPU with massive single thread horsepower. Even the Core i7 920 overclocked to 4GHz can't match its value with extra performance to compensate for the increase in price to $284. The overclocked Q6600 is again up near the top of the tables too and surprisingly AMD's current CPUs are generally better or similar value in single thread performance to the non-overclocked Core i7's. The large price difference between the two parties clearly not offsetting the large performance difference also.
